Creating Courteous Canine Companions

I am a very strong believer in positive, reward based training. The more you reward a dog for the behaviour you want, the more they are going to want to repeat the behaviour. I use positive reinforcement, so when your dog performs the correct behaviour, they receive a positive reward. and this builds trust and makes the dog actively want to learn.

Every dog is different, so the reward will be different, but rewards are beneficial in showing your dog that you are happy with the results. Dogs are highly intelligent and love to learn, and will be more willing to learn when they receive a positive outcome.

Other methods I use are luring, to physically guide a dog into a position, before the correct behaviour, which can also be 'shaped' into manageable steps, usually for breaking down complex behaviours, such as leg weaving whilst walking, or straight into the correct position, such as luring a sit.

Another way I teach, is to capture a behaviour, leading to capturing the habit.

Teaching your dog basic obedience, wlll give them the freedom of off lead walks, and coming with you to meet family and friends.
